Standard Poodle Information and Breed Notes
Standard Poodle Temperament
Forget the silly haircuts and the highly pruned prancing show specimens that you may have seen.
Forget the prissy, wimpy image of a dog that is the pampered pooch of Hollywood darlings.
This Poodle is anything but wimpy.
These are intelligent, loyal, adaptable dogs with a happy, playful personality and are often described as having a great sense of humour.
You will never be alone with a Poodle, they have a very sensitive temperament and seem to know exactly when you need some sympathy and adoration.
Poodles are people pleasers and will bond with the entire family rather than just one individual and will love to be at your side all day long.
The Standard Poodle temperament is generally very even and adaptable, they will be just as willing to lie at your feet while you watch TV, as they will be to follow when you decide to go for an impromptu hike in the mountains. It is no wonder then that Poodles are one of America’s top 10 most popular dog breeds.
Training: As mentioned this is an intelligent highly trainable breed, Standard Poodles therefore need to be kept mentally stimulated and taught positive behaviours, if you don't then they will happily develop their own rules, and it is unlikely that you will like what they teach themselves.
Many Poodle owners talk about dogs who know how to open the refrigerator or even unzip a purse and remove dog treats, however, since poodles are eager learners new owners will not find this a difficult energy to channel.
Children: Such an exuberant personality, one of the best dog breeds for children, particularly older ones Standard Poodles's bouncy playful excitability may be too much for smaller children however. The Poodle comes in two smaller varieties should the Standard be too large for you kids; they are the Miniature Poodle and the Toy Poodle with the miniature being a smaller version of the standard
Other Animals: Because of their hunting history, Poodles tend to have a strong prey drive which often manifests in a desire to chase every squirrel in the neighbourhood, for this reason introducing a small animal including a cat into the household can be problematic, the best thing really is to raise the dog with a cat from puppy hood.
Despite this, and unlike many other dogs, they can be taught to accept small animals as part of the pack and will even protect them as part of the family.
Protection level: The Standard Poodle is very territorial making them excellent watch dogs, alerting you of danger with a loud strong bark, will stand their ground.
Shedding: Very light, virtually non-existent with good grooming. Known particularly as a non-allergic dog breed the poodle is hypoallergenic and great for the sneezier owners amongst us.
The Poodle originated in Germany as a water retriever and is known for its trademark hair style, a style that was a purely practical working pattern that not only aided swimming but kept the unshaven joints and the chest area warm.
When Poodles came to France, they were appreciated more as companion and circus dogs than retrievers and the breed’s characteristic clip was accentuated. Successful efforts were then made to breed smaller Poodle specimens which resulted in the miniature and the toy varieties respectively. It was around this time that Poodles began to be associated more with France than Germany and they have only gone from strength to strength since then, especially in America where it is one of the most popular breeds.
The Standard Poodle Temperament Is Energetic, Intelligent, Playful And Adaptable
Grooming: The non-shedding quality of poodle’s the coat means that do it yourself dog grooming can be exhaustive. It is best to brush your poodle's coat every week to keep mats from forming and after any outdoor adventures to remove any burs or twigs from the coat.
Ensure that your Standard Poodle gets used to extensive grooming from a young age; These sessions can be very pleasant and a nice chance to bond with your dog and check him or her over for any cuts or abnormalities.
Roughly every 4-6 weeks your dog will need to be taken to a groomer to have its coat cleaned and trimmed. An ambitious owner could try to learn to groom their dog themselves, but it can be rather involved and hard to master
Exercise: These athletic dogs enjoy frequent outdoor exercise such as running and swimming. They should have a daily walk to burn off excess energy to keep them calm and manageable in the house. A daily 30 minute to hour long walk should be enough, a session of fetch in the yard or park will also help.
Poodles are one of the few breeds that seem to recognize other members of their own breed and the way they play when together is more bouncy and very different from play with other dogs and can be very fun too watch.
